Orders were re-keyed by hand and stock drifted daily. We wrote the interface contract first, got sign-off from the SAP team, then built a queue-backed layer with replay and dead-letter handling.
The problem
An industrial-supplies company sold through Shopify Plus but ran fulfilment, pricing and invoicing in SAP ECC. Orders were re-keyed by hand each morning; stock levels on the site drifted from reality by lunchtime.
The approach
We started with a three-week interface contract: every field for orders, customers, stock, prices and invoices, mapped and agreed with the SAP team, including what happens when a value is missing or SAP is unavailable.
The integration layer is queue-backed. Every handler is idempotent and every message can be replayed. Failures go to a dead-letter queue with the reason attached, and support can look up any order’s history without an engineer.
The result
Orders reach SAP in about four minutes. Stock and prices update on the site every five. Six months in, there have been no unplanned incidents.
